One Magical Evening, One United Community: R258,000 Raised for the Kloof & Highway SPCA

Category Community

Some evenings stay with you long after the last candle is blown out. This year’s Kloof & Highway SPCA annual fundraiser was one of those nights. A gathering of people who believe that compassion is not just a feeling, but an action. As the festive season draws near and the spirit of giving softens the world around us, our community came together in a way that reminded us what generosity can truly look like.

At the centre of it all stood the Kloof & Highway SPCA, an organisation that quietly carries one of the heaviest loads in our region. Their work is relentless, tender, and often unseen, responding to cruelty cases, rescuing abandoned animals, and offering refuge to the lost, the hurt, and the forgotten. In October alone, over 765 animals crossed their threshold. Each one needed care, each one needed hope, and each one found it because this SPCA never turns away. This annual fundraiser exists to help them keep doing exactly that.

The evening unfolded with warmth and heartfelt intention. Local businesses, artists, service providers, and animal lovers filled the room with a shared purpose: to make sure the SPCA can continue its life-saving work. Shelley Residential was grateful for the opportunity to support the SPCA as the event’s title sponsor, standing alongside others who care deeply about the remarkable work they do for animals in need. The event raised an extraordinary R258,000.00, a powerful testament to what happens when a community chooses kindness over indifference.

Generosity flowed in every direction. Tusker Trading, represented by the ever-supportive Lisa Hanger, once again donated the eagerly anticipated lucky draw prizes. The auction that followed was a celebration of creativity and community spirit. Works and experiences were contributed by Sean and Don Bergsma of Nambithi Hills, Macquets from Phumula Hotel, and by Belinda Van Der Riet of Cathedral Peak. The final contribution came from Bryan Cusack, who presented a handcrafted driftwood bee sculpture that captured the room’s admiration.

Art played a soulful role, too. Pieces from Merewyn De Heer of The Handmade Story, Greg Hayes of Stepping Stones, The Stone Company, and Clinton Friedman added depth and beauty to the evening, each artwork a reminder that giving can be both meaningful and expressive.

The ambience of the evening carried the same heart that fuelled the cause itself. Karen Morgan from Story Florists, supported by Shelley Cluver, Sandy Bosman and Jo Harburn, brought the décor to life with quiet artistry, while thoughtful finishing touches from Heather Goddard completed a setting that felt both elegant and deeply personal. Bellevue Café elevated the experience even further with beautifully prepared three-course meals that guests are still talking about, a reminder that this wasn’t only a fundraiser, but a memorable night out worth every moment and every penny.

Finally, in an act that speaks volumes about true generosity, Guy Cluver from Bellevue Café opened his doors at no cost, ensuring every cent raised went directly to the animals. The incomparable Rob Thunder once again brought the auction to life, guiding bidders with humour, passion, and a genuine commitment to the cause. And adding an unforgettable burst of energy, comedian Aaron Mcllroy had the crowd in stitches, setting the perfect tone for a night dedicated to making a difference.

“What stood out to me most wasn’t the décor, the art, the prizes or even the incredible sponsorships,” says Sarah van Heerden, Operations Manager at the Kloof & Highway SPCA. “It was the spirit of the evening. It revealed itself in the quiet moments. Hands raised to bid, volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes, and guests leaning in with genuine interest to learn more about our work. Those moments showed us the true heart of this community and its willingness to give.”

Josh Buitendach, co-founder of Shelley Residential, shares a gentle reminder with our readers, “If you weren’t able to join us, but if you’re feeling a little inspired, a little moved, or even a little festive, there are so many ways to help the SPCA. A donation doesn’t have to be money. A bag or tin of food, a warm blanket, a few hours of your time, a helping hand at the charity shop or kennels - every offering is felt, appreciated, and used with care. Let’s wrap up 2025 with more than just shiny bows and colourful ribbons.”

To everyone involved in this year’s annual fundraiser, thank you! Your kindness is felt with every life saved because of your support. Here’s to another year of standing together for compassion, for community, and for the animals who depend on all of us.
